Perfumed and packed with fruit and spice aromas and flavors, this red exudes finesse and class. Cherry, strawberry, rose, licorice, mineral and a flash of bergamot are shaded with oak spice and this continues to expand on the palate to a seemingly endless finish. There are dense, refined tannins uplifting it all. Best from 2029 through 2047.

All the Pinot Noir at Jadot is usually completely destemmed, but here (as in Amoureuses and Bonnes Mares), technical director Frédéric Barnier is experimenting with one-third whole clusters in the tank, which brings the wine interesting depth and length. There are bright blackcurrant and pomegranate aromas with hints of lead pencil and tea. There is no lack of tannin or depth on the palate, yet there is a lovely finesse. The grapes are from a 0.17-hectare parcel in lieu-dit Clos Saint-Denis owned by the Gagey family. It is among the hidden gems of the house.
94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru (Domaine Gagey) is beautiful, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, peonies, orange zest and smoke, followed by a full-bodied, satiny and suave palate that’s layered and vibrant, with lovely purity of fruit and a long, saline, resonant finish. It’s one of the finest wines in the Jadot cellar this year. Winemaker Frédéric Barnier and his team have produced another strong portfolio chez Jadot, with a relatively abundant crop of charming, pure and demonstrative wines, with alcohol back in more normal territory after the highs of 2018, 2019 and 2020. As I’ve written before, in the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. A cold room also helps chill down any fruit that’s too warm when it enters the winery. 2022 is also the second vintage of organic conversion for the Domaine Louis Jadot and the Domaine Gagey.
- 94-96 points Vinous
The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru contains 30% stems this year, which is translated onto the nose distinct from Jadot’s other reds: cracked black pepper and damp earth infuse the red fruit and lend the complexity underlying their inclusion. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and much more depth than the previous vintage, with a slightly powdery/chalky finish. There’s plenty of energy and tension from start to finish; this should age in consummate style.
