OK, a rather rare wine with only 120 cases produced and the UK’s allocation being a fraction of that, but what a stunner. Very old vine Grenache is matured in 100% new French oak in this vintage, in a big (15.5% ABV) wine with massive chocolate depth and a welterweight of blue/black fruit. There’s extraordinary plush juiciness to this, which is tight and hugely muscular, but it has great freshness, with real energy. Fabulous fruit, long, chewy, dense but superb definition of tannins and acidity against the huge ripeness and stunning concentration. The price quoted is per bottle, but available only as a pack of six. French merchant Voyageurs du Vin exports to the UK and at time of review also lists the 2012 vintage at 215 Euros per single bottle.

In an adolescent funk (this was stunning upon release), the 2012 Les Amis is in between the flush of youth and coming out on the other side into adult glory. Smoke and vanilla notes accent raspberry fruit, but the aromatics are somewhat dampened compared to other vintages. It’s still glorious, with ample weight and richness, and a long, plush finish. This was the only one of the Les Amis I found that showed its alcohol at all, and then only as slight warmth. Drink 2020-2032

(raised in new French oak barriques) Brilliant ruby-red. An expansive, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, incense, potpourri and Asian spices, and vanilla, cola and mineral flourishes add complexity. Stains the palate with sweet raspberry and boysenberry liqueur flavors that show outstanding clarity and breadth. The floral and spice notes repeat emphatically on the impressively long, gently tannic finish, which leaves smoke, mocha and clove notes behind.
