The 2019 Volare del Camino felt very precise and harmonious from the first time I put my nose in the glass. It’s serious and austere and has gained in austerity and seriousness, and 2019 could be the finest to date. It has violets and chalk dust, developing a note of rockrose, very clean with more red fruit, and it has light and an aerial sensation of lightness and energy. It has contained ripeness, 14% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity, with fine tannins—finer than those from the Inseparable from the same vintage. 1,428 bottles were filled in November 2020. It comes from a 0.5-hectare plot that was planted by the monks at the bottom of the hill that has the Iubileus and Per Se vineyards, the last of the hills from the Lomas del Jaboncillo in Gualtallary, the rocky and eastern more part of the Monastrerio subdivision of Gualtallary. Volare comes from a selection of the calcareous soils in the original vineyard that the Cristo Orante Monastery monks planted in 2008 in Gualtallary, about 1,400 meters above sea level, in northern Uco Valley. It’s a lower vineyard planted on flat soils, and winemaker David Bonomi has been using it since 2018 to make the wine for Volare del Camino and for Inseparable, the Per Se project’s two base wines. But the difference in soils is important—not at the level of the fruit, but of the textures. The aromas and flavors of the two wines are siblings, but the major difference is in that soil that here offers Volare a tension and edge that lend it verticality and a different kind of energy. Compared to Inseparable, this Volare is wilder.

The PerSe Gualtallary Volare Camino 2019 is a captivating red wine crafted in the prestigious Mendoza region of Argentina. This blend, predominantly Malbec with a touch of Cabernet Franc, hails from the high-altitude terroir of Gualtallary, known for its mineral-rich soils and cool climate. The 2019 vintage exhibits exceptional balance, showcasing vibrant notes of blackberries, cherries, and violets, complemented by subtle hints of graphite and spice. The palate is refined, with silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, elegant finish. This wine embodies precision and artistry, reflecting the unique characteristics of its origin. It pairs beautifully with red meats or aged cheeses. A true gem for collectors and enthusiasts.
