An “ouvree” is an ancient measure representing the amount of land a vigneron can work in one day – roughly 4.28 ares, just under one-twentieth of a hectare. “Dames” is an elegant French word for ladies. And thus the name was chosen as a tribute, both to this seductive wine and the women who made it – first and foremost to Laurence Jobard, Drouhin’s chief enologist for more than thirty years (and the first woman in Burgundy to become an enologist) – and to Veronique Drouhin, great-grand-daughter of the founder, who trained under Laurence Jobard before succeeding her. Produced only in 2000, 2005 and 2009 in minute quantities, from one of the finest sections of Clos des Mouches, it has since become one of the most sought-after collector’s cuvées of the domaine.

The 2000 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc l’Ouvrée des Dames 1er Cru is refulgent in color, more youthful than one would suspect. It has wonderful intensity on the nose of struck flint, brioche, pine nuts, almond flakes and hints of coconut, conveying real energy and vigor. The palate is vibrant on the entry with a killer line of acidity, and saline in the mouth, offering Japanese yellow plum, praline and tangerine towards the harmonious finish. I absolutely loved this wine before I knew anything about it.

Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe yellow fruit, yellow and white peach, fresh lemon, a hint of apricot, sweet spices and mineral. Exceptional concentration, beautifully layers opulent yellow fruit, rich and opulent but also perfectly precise, harmonious and weightless, medium acidity, strong mineral, and a long rich yellow fruit drive finish. It is now showing GC like balance and finesse. Drinking magnificently.
