Deep red/purple colour. The bouquet has dusty-earthy, peppery, dry spice and floral aromas; the palate lush and gorgeously elegant, fruit-sweet and stylish, with complex berry fruit and spice flavours of real charm. There’s a floral overtone – the bouquet is quite exquisite. Great intensity, precision and length of palate. A great wine; very likely the best Langi shiraz yet. Drink 2021-2039

We will sadly only receive 15 dozen cases in the UK from a total of 250 dozen made, but this is one of the great Langi’s of all time. I have a particular penchant for this wine having followed it for many years and this is one of the most expressive and sensual releases I can remember. You will note that there are no less than four Mount Langi Ghiran Wines, all made from Shiraz (Mast Shiraz, Cliff Edge Shiraz and Talus Shiraz are the others) and all from the same region – you simply must track at least one of them down to experience just how engaging and vital they all are. The flavour of Blue Label, as Langi Shiraz is usually called, is based around a stone fruit theme. There is no trace of cassis here, but wave after wave of cherry, plum, olive and pluot and this indulgent fruit core is augmented with tobacco and Asian spices. In spite of its youth, there is nothing austere or occluded about this glorious wine.

Tasting this makes you feel all’s well with the world. It’s the very essence of refinement, balance and elegance. It’s delicately aromatic with violets, pepper – just a smidge – wood spice and dark blue-red fruits. It’s ultimately a savoury wine. Velvety tannins, complex flavours and a lingering finish. Bravo.”

The Langi vineyard is one the most distinguished and distinctive sites for Shiraz in the country, and the detail and refinement that it displays in the cooler seasons is nothing short of astonishing. No season in recent releases exemplifies this more emphatically than 2017, dialling down alcohol and amplifying spice, personality, endurance, persistence, superfine tannins and sheer, unbridled, euphoric joy.
