Jorge Monzón from Dominio del Aguila is a qualified oenologist and has worked at some of the very best wineries, including Romanée Conti and Vega Sicilia. Beautifully bundled, Burgundian cherry fruit on the nose, like a fully concentrated Chambertin, fine mix of red and black cherry, Amarena, also a fine, cool cassis-blueberry touch that is classic for Ribera-Tempranillo. An expansive, breathtakingly dense and concentrated nose. But remaining full in finesse and elegance, no overripeness, no jamminess, just perfectly balanced concentration. A little Roberto Voerzio Barolo in style. Ethereal, violets, clove pepper, a little cinnamon, blackberry. In addition, a lot of limestone or chalk reminiscent base, mussel shell and sea water. What a fine fragrance. With a simultaneously bold extract sweetness without fat, sounds somewhat paradoxical, but there is no other way to describe this nose. Kaleidoscope-like complexity and enormous complexity, every time you smell the glass you get the feeling that the wine is changing slightly. Sometimes the fruit dominates more, sometimes the stone dominates more, sometimes the spicy notes. In the mouth, the astonishment is even greater, what a finesse, almost a fine polish. Juicy blue forest berries, blueberries, blackberries, with the finest sweetness, but so stylish and elegant, never exuberant, but so sweet, charming and creamy. Carried by perfectly polished tannins and grandiose, brilliant Ribera acidity from cool vineyards. Massively dense tannin in the finish from the slow whole-grape fermentation, so lush and at the same time so fine that it flows over the palate like rough velvet. With this Reserva, you have to resort to superlatives to describe it properly: ultra-fine, ultra-stylish and ultra-polished, with such terrific freshness in the fruit. An eternal finish in which the blue-red fruit overlaps several times in the dense tannin coating and the juicy, salty acid freshness. A monument of a Reserva, because it is perfectly balanced and harmonious, yet still has all the attributes for eternity. The iron fist in the velvet glove for a Tondonia or Vega Sicilia-like ageing potential. Yet it is so incredibly juicy and delicate even in its youth and never loses its balance despite its overwhelming concentration. I can think of little that could be done better here, apart from giving the wine the necessary maturity to tame the chalky, gripping tannins. Nevertheless, I refrain from giving this wine the highest rating, because there is also a Gran Reserva of this wine above it. Even if it might have deserved it in the Reserva class.
