The vineyard is almost 300 meters above sea level. The subsoil is a kind of limestone/clay mixture, but dry. The same subsoil as that found in Barolo. The vineyard is the youngest of the three large sites. Only planted in 1963. 100% Grenache. All spontaneously fermented as whole bunches and undestemmed in cement, matured in new and one-year-old barriques. All biodynamically cultivated vineyards. Le Poste has to fight with La Claux for the most elegant nose currently, so fine, polished, stony, almost cool-seeming, that was the case in 2020 and is even more so in 2022 from a similarly hot, almost even hotter year. But it is so elegant, almost minty, ethereal, licorice and peppermint with red plum and sloe, lots of red and black pepper from the stalks. Liquorice galore in the mouth too, rolled in elderberry. Wow! Incredibly rich, juicy, hedonistically fine, but wow, does it have a lot of punch and sweetness. A gigantic vintage full of intensity and sweet tannins. Then again those red and blue berries. Enormously fine, fresh and playful, yet aromatic. So intense. Le Poste is a real extremist in its form of expression. So idiosyncratic. I see it a touch ahead of the Hominis Fides this year, but that’s certainly a matter of taste. Really great wines here!

My favorite of the trio (but that’s splitting hairs), the 2022 Gigondas La Poste is similarly full-bodied and concentrated, yet I love its purity and balance. Ripe red and black fruit, violets, spring flowers, and foresty, garrigue nuances all shine in this beautifully polished, layered, elegant Gigondas that has flawless balance. It shows the riper style of the vintage yet stays light on its feet and incredibly pure. Don’t miss it.

To me, le Poste always includes a nuance akin to salted licorice, and that’s certainly the case with the 2022 Gigondas le Poste. It infuses the blackberry fruit with a salty, savory complexity unmatched by the other Saint-Cosme wines, while still being full-bodied, richly concentrated and velvety-textured, with a stunning, nearly endless finish. Have I underestimated it from barrel?
