The wine was planted in 1870, but it is not an original vine, but a grafted rootstock. It is the first vineyard in the southern Rhône to be grafted in this way. The oldest vineyard in the domain, directly in front of the house, 1.5 hectares. The subsoil here is limestone. The exposure is southwest. Shell limestone from 10 million year old limestone formations on which these ancient vines stand. The wine is made from 100% Grenache. Le Claux (or Clos = walled vineyard) is 270 meters high. This high altitude, together with the cool microclimate of the Saint Cosme vineyards, gives the Grenache a completely different expressiveness than in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, for example. That is why we have a fruit style here that is much more reminiscent of Burgundy, and also a little of the Loire and ancient Cabernet Franc. Fermented spontaneously in cement as a whole grape, including the stalk. Aged in new and used barriques. Le Claux has, as so often, the most elegant nose of the three single-vineyard wines from Gigondas. Playful, ethereal, Burgundian, ultra-fine, lots of rich berry fruit and garrigue, dancing. The great elegance and perfect balance is reminiscent in its cool, juicy finesse, fits so perfectly with this miracle of elegance that is Le Claux. Wonderful, showing beautiful sharpness in the mouth. Grapefruit gives freshness and acidity, mango, vineyard peach give charm and sweetness. What an intoxicating balance, everything plays and dances, meshes perfectly, flawless velvety tannin quality. 2022 has a brutal amount of tannin, but it is totally ripe, polished and honed, unearthly fine. Always one of the greatest Gigondas ever. The 2022 is a wine for eternity.

Robust, floral and intense. 100% old-vine grenache, expressing aromas of wild berries, sweet cherries, orange peel, dried flowers, grilled herbs and loads of spices. It’s full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Juicy at the centerwith so much energy. It’s vibrant and focused with good drive in the finish. Bright and agile.

Aromatically quite closed at the time of tasting, but this has power and vibrancy on the palate, there’s a touch of sweetness to the fruit, which is dark and brooding cassis and blackberry. Generous in smooth, ripe fruit and stacked with an intense chewy layer of velvety tannin. Fresh and intense, this stands out for its sheer driving intensity and focus. No great flesh, but serious depth, and will make an impressive structural style of Gigondaswhen it’s ready. From old vines, all whole-cluster fermented in concrete, no destemming, indigenous yeasts, and matured 100% in barriques; one third new, one third second use, one third third use.
The corpulent 2022 Gigondas le Claux is impressive for its size and richness but also for its feeling of airiness and overall elegance, despite massively concentrated black cherry fruit. It should be another blockbuster vintage for this parcel of old-vine Grenache.
