A really floral and beautiful red with redcurrant and berry aromas, as well as crushed stones, following through to a medium to full body with really fine tannins that integrate beautifully into the wine. Wonderful length, too. Tight, polished tannins give a pretty texture to this. 85% cabernet sauvignon, 9% petit verdot, 3% cabernet franc and 3% merlot. Already gorgeous and hard not to drink now, but better after 2026.

For a ‘second’ wine, this is no slouch. There’s dense plummy fruit on the nose, which shows fine weight of fruit. The attack is soft and luxurious, with spice cutting the richness, and the tannins are well integrated. The acidity is moderate, so overall it lacks some drive, though there is length. Already approachable.

The 2019 DB4 checks in as a Cabernet-dominated blend that includes 10% Petit Verdot and 3% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc brought up mix of new (70%) and used barrels. The entry level wine from the estate, its deep ruby hue is followed by a spicy, medium to full-bodied, rich, rounded, sexy mountain Cabernet with wonderful red and black fruits, lots of tobacco and cedar pencil-like aromatics, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s a wonderfully complete, balanced, sexy wine to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years.

The 2019 DB4 is gracious, aromatically expressive and light on its feet. In 2019, the DB4 is a touch nervy, but it has plenty of persistence and fine balance. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint and chalk add an appealing upper register. The 2019 is a charmer, that is for sure. There is an exotic quality that is especially enticing.
