The nose of El Pisón is quite unique and incomparable to the previous wines. Sure, we have the typical coolness of 2021, we have elderberry, rowanberry, and licorice, as well as mint again, After Eight, and a hint of anise, along with subtle nuances of various forest fruits. A touch of exoticism from orange zest, fresh tobacco, and freshly baked bread. Surprisingly, the sweetest wine in the mouth. What an immense burst of sweet red and black cherries! Velvety tannins, violets in the nose and mouth. Great harmony, yet the wine is multi-complex. Extremely expressive and rich in the mouth. Wow, what an event! The wine stands for minutes; everything changes, shifting between sweet and sour. Sweet cherry, sour cherry, sloe, all underpinned by that ripe, silky tannin. A highly intense chalky and saline finish. It’s Artadi’s most complex and complete wine, yet it doesn’t hide the coolness of the 2021 vintage. Awesome!

2.4 hectares in Laguardia, clay-rich, highly permeable loam soil, rich in limestone and coarse-grained sandstone, east-facing, planted in 1945. Dense, intense, and complex, dark fruits, spicy, smoky, and gripping. Lively, sweet, elegant fruit, power and finesse, harmony, and impressive persistence.

Reductive at first before deep aromas emerge of mineral, fine herbs, white pepper, oyster shells, hibiscus, freshly chopped blueberries and forest berries. Really dissolved and transparent on the palate with great tension and immaculate tannins. Persistent, mineral-driven finish. Already approachable now but this has impeccable balance, allowing it to age effortlessly. Better give it two years to get rid of the reduction.

The 2021 Viña El Pisón started a little reduced and needed a little bit of time in the glass to open up. It’s sharper than previous vintages of this wine, with a superb mouthfeel and very elegant tannins. The chalky sensation in the palate is quite marked. The wine has amazing balance and the components to develop for a long time in bottle. It didn’t stop growing in the glass, and that is a sign of a wine that is going to grow in bottle. I’d give it some more time before pulling the cork. 5,500 bottles were filled in June 2023.
