The nose is not characterized by wood at all, but only by extremely transparent black-red fruit – highly intense. Liquorice, eucalyptus and mint are at the forefront, followed by menthol and a sweet yet sour fruit. Extremely transparent and clear. The wine is somewhat reminiscent of extreme high altitudes from Ribera del Duero in this incredible freshness and simultaneously black fruit. Cassis is added, some blueberry, a slight tannic sharpness, black pepper and chili. Wow, what a mouthful, 2021 is extremely good for the San Lázaro! So slender – the eyebrows draw together, the eyes become small, the tongue rolls. What intensity! Redcurrant, a crisp acidity that is not sharp, not unpleasant, but simply balances these masses of silky fruit perfectly. What a prancing marvel, a masterpiece of Tempranillo! I have never tasted San Lazaro so brilliantly here. This year it is a must! It even beats La Hoya – and that’s saying something. I’m still flashed after spitting and that was hard enough. What a brilliant length, a reverberation lasting several minutes. Menthol comes up again, along with After Eight and a sweet and at the same time sour fruit. The wine really hits the spot, but the tannins are totally silky. There’s nothing rough or unripe here, it’s just so incredibly intense in this slender, concentrated finesse. A great wine for those who love finesse wines of this kind. The opposite of a blockbuster. Nothing to impress an inexperienced circle of friends, just something to take the piss out of Burgundy lovers in a blind tasting. Great stuff!

Black berry, fern, black truffle and blueberry aromas follow through to a medium to full body with a tight structure in the palate showing compacted fine tannins and excellent length. Lead pencil shavings and dark fruits in the finish. Very racy. Drink in 2027 and onwards but already beautiful, if a little shy, now.

A first bottle of the 2021 San Lázaro felt austere, serious and a little closed, but a second one was a lot more expressive and elegant but not quite reaching the expressiveness of the 2021 El Carretil that today stole the show. This is subtle, delicate and svelte, a wine of finesse (but never without power), harmonious and complete. 4,000 bottles were filled in May 2023.

1.62 hectares in Laguardia, very sandy, loamy soil, southeast facing, planted in 1956. Intense and fresh with mint, cherries, and cassis, yet fascinatingly accessible. Full of energy, minerality, silkiness, finesse, and irresistible “simplicity,” according to Juan Carlos. Drinking window: 2024 – 2045
