As always, this wine has the most fascinating nose for me. Incredibly transparent. Fresh cherry with mint and licorice, very energetic and highly aromatic, attacking the sense of smell. Silky tannins on the nose. Lots of minerality in the background. This is the first wine in the series with so much red cherry underneath this trace of elderberry, which is apparently so characteristic of this vintage. There is also rowan berry, underpinned by garrigue, mint and menthol. A slight trace of tobacco underneath, very finely interwoven. The fruit intensity reminds me of Vosne-Romanée, but the wine is not as thick and pushing as a Burgundy from this appellation, it is much finer, much more prancing. Somewhere between a great Callet from Mallorca and a very fine Nerello Mascalese from Etna. This nose is really chic and exciting! There is a slight woody note on the palate, but that is intentional. Behind it is this pushing cherry, which is picked up by the mint. A slender majesty with great mineral length. Very lively, very juicy and yet very focused. The mouth tightens at this great tension. The wine is ripe and silky, but still the opposite of fat, the opposite of a blockbuster. High elegance and aromatic tension, terrific mineral length. But with a finesse never before experienced here. A super-graceful power wine and by no means a blockbuster to impress. Completely different in style to the previously tasted grandiose San Lázaro, but on the same level.

Intense aromas of white pepper, blueberries, graphite, metal shavings, violets, and black truffle follow through to a medium body with chewy and fine tannins and a very structured finish. Oyster shell as well. Subtle black pepper, too. Needs four or five years to soften and open. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2027.

Deep cherry red. Complex, expressive, spicy and mineral on the nose. Red fruit, ripe fruit and chalk. Elegant, full, long and persistent on the palate.

The nose of the 2021 El Carretil is an explosion of flowers; it’s aromatic, perfumed, open, expressive and super elegant, clean, nuanced and showy. It has a seamless palate with very fine tannins, ethereal, with lots of energy and light. This has to be the finest vintage of El Carretil to date. Today, this hits the bull’s-eye. Bravo! 5,300 bottles were filled in May 2023.
