This is a Listan Blanco vineyard from inside a crater. Lovely matchstick reduction on the nose with pithy lemony fruit. Stony, mineral palate with great energy and some dried herbs. Lively and bright with nice weight.

Made from 100% Listan Blanco in the crater of the Chupadero volcano (one of 100+ volcanoes in Lanzarote), the vineyard has to be seen to be believed. The 75+ year old vines are planted in 5m deep, 15m in diameter holes in the iron/magnesium-rich soils of the volcano. On the nose, this wine has struck match, grapefruit and a saline minerality. On the palate, it opens with a rich, creamy texture but quickly tapers down to a mineral-laden, lemon-peel dominated character. The whole bunches are fermented in concrete eggs after a low-pressure press. This is exactly how one would imagine a volcanic wine should taste. Delicious now (and delightfully enjoyable at just 11% alcohol), it should keep nicely – at least for up to 5 years. 800 bottles made.
About...
Jable de Tao, a winery that has revolutionised the Lanzarote wine scene by presenting its first vintage, the 2022, and 4 very different white wines. Jable is the name given to volcanic sand, these tiny black rocks, smaller than the so-called ‘rofe’, which abound in the Canary Islands.
The maker of these wine marvels is Carmelo Peña, known for his own project in Gran Canaria (Bien de Altura), but with extensive previous experience in winemaking in Lanzarote.
Chupadero is the name of the vineyard located in La Geria, in an ancient volcano crater. The plantation method is in “hoyos” (or “holes”), manual excavations up to 5 metres deep and 15 metres in diameter, which are necessary to protect the vines from the strong Alisio winds and to reach the fertile soil which is covered by volcanic sand (eroded stone, rofe) and other minerals rich in different compositions of metals such as iron and magnesium.
Listán Blanco is not the most widely planted variety on Lanzarote, but this old vineyard in a unique location requires special care. This wine ferments in a concrete egg, where it will also be left for 12 months to refine on its lees.
Very limited production of 800 bottles.
