Tildin was the pet name of Angelo Gaja’s grandmother. It has been bottled as a single-vineyard wine since 1970, which was still visionary back then because most of the wines in Piedmont were blends from different vineyards. The plot is located directly above the Costa Russi in the Roncagliette cru location at an altitude of 280 meters. Here the microclimate is noticeably drier than in Costa Russi, so the grapes are smaller and this leads to greater density in this wine. The vintages from 1996 to 2011 had around 5 percent Barbera in the cuvée, and since 100 percent Nebbiolo is required for the Barbaresco DOCG, the Costa Russi during this period – like Gaja’s other individual vineyards – was bottled under the Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. Since the 2013 vintage, the wine has again been pure Nebbiolo and bears the Barbaresco DOCG on the label. Fermentation in large Stockinger fermentation tanks made of Austrian oak, then the wine is fermented in small French barrels – barriques and 500 liter tonneaux. But new wood is never used. The blend is made after 12 months and then matures in large barrels for another 12 months. The “Botte” used are made by Gamba from French oak and Stockinger from Austrian oak. Here we have a splendid concentration of fragrance. Violets, potpourri, as well as red strawberries and cherries. The seductive nose is downright Burgundian – greetings from Chambolle-Musigny. In the mouth, the precise freshness is noticeably more pronounced here than in Costa Russi, which comes from the altitude. Grippy tannins lead to an almost salty minerality. This wine is great for its finesse and outstanding balance.

A spiced profile emerges from the 2021 Barbaresco Sori Tildin, which has a bright red color and offers notes of ripe black cherries, graphite, wet stones, and darker minerals. There’s more power and backbone in this wine, as well as more depth and structure. It’s remarkably focused, with ripe tannins, fantastic purity and balance, and ripe mineral undercurrents. These 2021s are some of the best wines I’ve ever tasted from Gaja, and this one has great potential for the long haul.

Subtle and complex aromas of blackberries, pine needles, bark, light spices and violets. It’s really perfumed and attractive. Full-bodied and chewy, but the tannins are very, very fine. It goes on for minutes. This a brooding, muscular wine but it is very refined. One for the cellar. Best after 2028.

The 2021 Barbaresco Sorì Tildin is a real head-turner. What a wine. As is the case in its best years, Sorì Tildinis distinguished by its nuanced personality and detail. Everything speaks to finesse and fineness. Crushed rocks, rose petals, vibrant red fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper lend notable energy and brightness throughout.

Powerful, bright ruby-garnet colour. Very clear and memorable nose with notes of fresh cherry, crisp raspberry, blood orange and pomegranate. Fills the palate full, compact and very present, well-developed fruit, opens up with present, pithy tannins in many layers, has plenty of bite at the back, made for a long life!
