A brightly jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barbaresco is super-expressive, with loads of wild raspberries that leap from the glass along with notes of strawberries, pressed roses, fresh orange, and violet. As it opens, it evens picks up some spice box, cigar incense, and cherry notes. Crystalline in nature and ripe, this next-level red delivers ripe, sweet tannins, great tension, and fresh, vibrant acidity, without any austerity. A luxury racecar, it’s fantastic and possibly the wine of the year. Drink 2025-2055.

A legendary wine from a Winery that needs no further introduction. The grapes for this wine come partly from Barbaresco and partly from Treiso – the blend consists of 14 vineyards, eleven of which are in Barbaresco and three in the village of Treiso. The soils here are very sandy on limestone and clay. After fermentation in steel tanks, the grapes are fermented separately by vineyard, then in small French barrels – barriques and 500-liter tonneaux. But new wood is never used. After 12 months, the blend is made and then matured for a further 12 months in large barrels. The “botti” used are made by Gamba from French oak and Stockinger from Austrian oak. Bright ruby red. The nose is intensely fruity with ripe strawberries, sweet raspberries, blackcurrants, fragrant violets and ethereal herbs. Aromatically, this year’s wine is almost lavishly opulent, full-bodied and open – it takes me straight into its arms! Experience shows that wines like the 2016s will close up a little in a few years and open up again after around ten years. After the initial, intense wave of fruit, the wine’s many fine tannins linger on the tongue. Firm yet ripe and delicate, they give this Barbaresco the immense structure of a great vintage. In the mouth it is almost monumental! Rosehips, cranberries and sour cherries with a hint of bitter herbs, white nougat and the delicate spice of white limestone. At the moment, this great wine is not giving everything away due to its monumental structure; it deserves a few years in the cellar. Great stuff!

This was an epic vintage, and the entire Gaja family is ready to sing its praises. The 2021 Barbaresco sets the tone with sweet cherry flavors framed by spice, earthy notes and elegantly sweet tannins. Giovanni Gaja says the 2021 growing season had two phases: the first six months of the year saw rain and cool temperatures with some frost and soggy conditions until May; however, from June forward, the season saw sunny days without excessive heat spikes. Indeed, 2021 marks the beginning of drought years that lasted until 2023. Barbaresco was hit by hail on July 31, 2021, but the Gaja vineyards were unharmed. In line with the character of the vintage, this wine shows succulent fruit that is balanced and not too ripe. There is depth and volume here.

A selection of the best Barbaresco vineyards: Impressive bouquet of red berries and flowers, also balsamic nuances; combines precision and fullness, the long-lasting tannins and the pithy acidity in harmony, straightforward and elegant.
