Luca Roagna came to this vineyard involuntarily. His cousin, owner of the small winery and these vineyards, died unexpectedly in an accident. The family asked him to continue vinifying these ancient vines and so he came into possession of this vineyard with Timorasso. Luckily, Luca is very good friends with the grand master of this grape variety, Walter Massa. With his help, he has been producing a borderline ingenious Timorasso from ancient vines for years, which even surpasses the best material produced by his mentor Massa. Due to its pronounced phenolic nature, this wine shows so much power and finesse after a long maceration period. The Timorasso changes from quince to melon, lemongrass, orange. Lots of yellow fruit. If you weren’t told anything, you would never place it in Piedmont but would probably think of it as a great wine from the Loire. The wine is so individual and independent. For me, only the Timorasso, when it comes across in this extreme form as in Massa and Roagna, is world-class white wine from the indigenous grape varieties of Piedmont. Of course there are great Chardonnays here, but that’s international. But whether Gavi, Arneis or similar, nothing indigenous can come close to this class of Timorasso. This is superb and individual material.

Radiant, clear stagnant yellow. In the nose quince, citrus and a potpourri of yellow fruits. On the palate, this saltiness is paired with a well-dosed wood spice. The long maceration time gives this great white wine power and endurance. Fine astringency is paired with a pressure that gives this wine – paired with well-dosed acidity and always very present fruit – the uniqueness that makes it at least equal to the great whites of the Loire or Burgundy, even in direct comparison. And yet it bears the individual Roagna signature: a style that cannot be found in France or in other Piedmont vineyards. And that really means something, since the white wines of this noble Italian region are getting better from year to year.

Roagna Montemarzino 2021 – A Unique Expression of Timorasso

This white wine from Piedmont showcases the character of the Timorasso grape with remarkable depth and precision. The nose reveals aromas of ripe orchard fruits, citrus zest, and a subtle mineral touch. On the palate, it balances richness with vibrant acidity, offering notes of pear, almond, and a hint of honey. Aged patiently to enhance its complexity, it finishes with a lingering salinity that speaks of its terroir. This is a rare and captivating interpretation of one of Italy’s most intriguing white varieties.
