This cru produced about 35 hl/ha in 2019 but only 12 hl/ha in 2020. The allocation fight is sure to be grim. This, like the Clos des Porrets St-Georges, is more rustic than in recent vintages with the full body packed with concentration and extract and hemmed in by gravelly tannins. The acidity, however, is fresh and vivacious. Smoky, meaty and sultry with mulberry and black plum flavors, this will be a treat down the road. 2027-40.

A bright, succulent style, this boasts black cherry, blackberry, spice and mineral aromas and flavors. Vibrant and elegant in profile, with terrific harmony and a long, fruit-filled aftertaste. The firm, supportive tannins catch up on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Cropped at just 14hl/ha, the 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru easily has the best bouquet from Gouges’sreds with a mixture of red and black fruit, sous-bois, pressed roses and just a smudge of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, a fine-boned structure with plenty of freshness and focus on the finish. There is a lot of substance here and as such, this will require 4-6 years to reach its drinking window.
