Pedro Ballesteros’ Club Oenologique says:

“My overall champion of the Ribera del Duero Report 2024 is Pago de Carraovejas. It is, in my opinion, one of the best brands in Ribera and elsewhere, equivalent to Bordeaux’s Grand Cru Classé wines. It offers great quality, enough quantity (several hundred thousand bottles each year), a well-defined flavour profile and the capacity to age graciously for many years. Ribera del Duero has decided not to foster single vineyards, and therefore the region is bound to build its future success through its brands. I am convinced that, upon this basis, Carraovejas is sure to become a great ambassador for Spain at its best. For me, this label is surely a game-changer.”  Undoubtedly one of the finest reds in the Ribera region, increasingly seen as on the same footing as Vega Sicilia or Pingus.

This is like drinking liquid silk. Seamless and refined, with no holes or gaps, it has a lot of power, weight and concentration, yet carries these effortlessly. It could last for many years, but it’s so delicious now that it would take a lot of willpower to cellar it. Pago de Carraovejas is challenging Vega Sicilia and Pingus for top spot in Ribera del Duero, and from tasting this wine, it’s easy to see why. Utterly sensational.

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The single-vineyard 2018 Cuesta de Las Liebres comes from a plot that was planted in 1992 behind the winery at some 850 meters in altitude, where the soils have more limestone and the vines are head pruned. This has been made with 100% Tempranillo since 2014 (even though they have other varieties there), and they abandoned the 200% new oak regime for the élevage and now do 24 months in new barrels with lower toast, racked after 12 months. It has 15% alcohol and comes through as powerful and ripe. It’s full-bodied and has fine tannins and less oaky notes than in the past, with balance and freshness combined with the power and concentration. This is a powerful and classical wine that is not produced every year and is designed for the long haul. Drink 2024-2032.
